Close your eyes and think about your bedroom.
Is it a cosy hideaway decked out with the latest in 21st-century creature comforts? An escapist retreat with cool tones, soft details, and luxury accents? Or maybe a minimalist paradise sleekly designed for the perfect night’s sleep?
As far as we’re concerned, all of these answers are equally correct.
The truth is, the bedrooms in your home––whether they be girls’ rooms, boys’ rooms, couples rooms, or any number of spaces where the end game is rest and relaxation––can be many things. They can be elegant, rustic, romantic, traditional, classic, contemporary, eclectic, eccentric…the list goes on and on.
The one thing they can’t be, however, is boring.
So if you’re picturing your very own bedroom and all you see is a bedframe, an endtable, and not much else, it may be time to redesign your sleep-scape.
We can help you with that.
Here are our top tips on how to reinvent your bedroom so it better reflects who you are and what makes you happy. Follow our advice and bedtime might just become your favourite part of the day (if it isn’t already).
#1: Map out All Pieces, Great and Small
We’ve been in the design business for quite a while, so you can trust us when we tell you one of the most frequent questions we face is: “Will this furniture fit in my room?”
And hey, we’re not surprised. Actually, we’re pretty impressed.
Size is the number one consideration when furnishing your bedroom (or any other room in your house, for that matter). Here’s just a few reasons why furniture size matters, particularly when it comes to where you sleep:
- With the right balance, spatial proportions can elevate your interior to the sublime. When done wrong, however, they can destroy your aesthetic and leave your bedroom feeling too cramped or too cavernous, depending on your mistakes. Let the room dictate your choices as best you can. A wide space calls for wide nightstands, for example. Similarly, an extra long room may require a bench or settee at the foot of the bed to even things out.
- In a bedroom, the mattress and bedframe form the centrepiece of the space. Miscalculate and the room could be overwhelmed by a bulky headboard or, even worse, be left looking empty and unimpressive thanks to a disappointing frame.
(Warning: Headboards and bedframes vary widely in size, and no two are alike. Proceed carefully!)
- And then there are logistics to consider. Imbalanced proportions aren’t just unslightly, they can also be dangerous (crowded rooms can lead to scrapes and bruises, at the very least). Plus, incorrect measurements can leave you with a lot of frustration on your hands (furniture that won’t make it through your door, pieces that are too oversized to function properly, headaches brought on by return policies and procedures…you see where we’re going with this).
The best way to ensure a beautiful bedroom flow and to sidestep any design disasters is to measure everything you’re planning to buy. Start with the bedframe and then measure any smaller-silhouetted items (such as wardrobes, dressers, or endtables).
Then measure again.
Next, take these numbers home with you and compare them to your walls and floor. Make mockups of furniture footprints using tape if you have to. Experiment. Ask yourself: “Can my room really hold all the pieces I’ve chosen?” “Will the furniture allow me enough space to feel comfortable?” “Do these pieces help me reach my ideal aesthetic proportions?” Remember:
You can never be too prepared (or too cautious) when mapping out a new bedroom landscape.
#2: Settle on Style
A general rule of thumb for buying bedroom furniture is to look inward. What’s your preferred style? What colours and textures make you feel at home? Do you favour a modern aesthetic or something more on the classical side?
It’s important to furnish your bedroom—the room where you’ll likely be spending most of your time—with pieces that appeal to you. If your budget is constrained, consider purchasing over time. Better to stretch out your purchases and secure items you really love rather than end up being stuck with pieces you’re less than crazy about. Pressed for time? Try investing in at least one item that makes you smile every time you see it, and then fleshing out the rest of the room with more cost-effective pieces.
Regardless of budget and timing, it’s essential to think about the overall look you’d like to achieve and decide on all your pieces at once so you can be sure of aesthetic cohesion. (Hint: We usually start with one “wow” piece such as a bed or nightstand and then build out from there before settling on a final design.)

#3 Don’t get carried away
While it’s tempting to fill your bedroom space with an army of striking, majestic pieces, our Cayman interior designers have always found that, in such cases, less is more. When laying out your bed-scape, aim to declutter instead of overpower. A dresser and a chest of drawers placed side by side? Avoid at all costs. You probably won’t need all those clothes from 20 years ago anyway, and your room will thank you for allowing it to breathe.
In addition, steer clear of nightstands designed for storage rather than style. Too many drawers and you risk transforming an elegant accessory into a glorified garbage receptacle. We’ve always found that single-drawer endtables are perfect for housing your nighttime necessities. They can also help your bedroom vignette appear lighter and more open. (Note: Nightstands can measure anywhere from 16” to 42” wide, so choose wisely before you buy!)
Lastly, just say “no” to matched sets. They may seem lovely on paper, but in reality they can leave a bedroom feeling stilted and impersonal. You want your space to convey a considered approach to design, one that speaks to your unique personality. A matched set can come across as too bland and “cookie-cutter,” which we’re guessing isn’t the statement you’re hoping to make.
#4 Handle finishing touches with care
Sometimes the success of your bedroom look hinges on a single choice that might feel small at first, but is actually pretty crucial when it comes to the final aesthetic analysis. A bed-scape can rise or fall on your headboard selection, for example, so it’s a good idea to decide on the appropriate colour and texture for your space (upholstered? wooden? metal? cool? warm?) before proceeding with the remainder of the design. (Food for thought: The best bedframe for your room may not be compatible with the best mattress for your sleep cycle needs. Make sure the headboard you have in mind will accommodate the size, shape, and material of your ideal mattress so you can create the most relaxing bedroom possible.)
Bedding is another key point to remember. Your bedding accessories make up one of the largest visual components of your bedroom and they have a significant effect on the overall feel. Beyond bedspread colour and fabric selections, we’re always careful with our accents when choosing the right bedding. Throw pillows and decorative blankets are always a great addition if you’re looking for extra density and variety to bring out the very best in your interiors.
Oh—and don’t forget your floors! Rugs can often make a bedroom seem even more inviting than usual. Just be cautious about size. We recommend at least an 8’ x 10’ if you have queen bed or a 9’ x 12’ if you’ve chosen a king. If spacing is a problem, try opting for smaller runners on either side of your bed, which will work just as well.
Whether you live in the Cayman Islands year-round, or own an island property that you consider your home away from home, the expert team at HÜIS Cayman is happy to walk you through the often turbulent process of selecting and buying your bedroom furniture and of course, designing a bedroom! We’ll provide guidance every step of the way, and we won’t be satisfied until your bed-scapes reflect the beauty, passion, and serenity that best appeal to your personal taste.
